IDS Field Excursion to Italy 2011
Italian Language/Art 12
16 Burnaby Mountain students embarked on an Italian language, culture, and art history journey beginning in September 2011 with Italian language and art history classes taught afterschool by Mr. Salvatore and Mr. Sullens and culminating in a trip to beautiful Florence, Italy. In Florence the students were given further instruction in language and art history through the Centro Fiorenza while living with Italian families and taking in the glory of this eternal city of sublime beauty. Learning how to bargain at the markets, bicycling the ancient fortified walls of Lucca, taking a gondola ride in Venice, climbing the leaning tower of Pisa, were among the many highlights of this amazing experience - and let's not forget the food!!
Allison - Grade 12 student IDS Italian Language/Art 12
"It's one thing to study a language from the textbook, but to actually live it, to walk amongst it, to actually see, feel and touch the masterpieces and landmarks of its culture really made this IDS field trip a hands-down ultimate experience for me. We had so much fun. The afterschool sessions with Mr. Salvatore and Mr. Sullens really helped prepare us for the trip and gave us a great foundation to build on and explore further when we actually arrived in Italy! Grazie mille!!"

Drama Production
"My IDS course is associated with Textiles 12. For someone like myself who is always looking to express myself creatively, this program has given me the opportunity to find a further outlet to do so. The flexibility of being able to set my own working hours is a breath of fresh air. Among the several projects I have on the go, one which I am presently putting many hours into is the designing and manufacturing of costumes for the Burnaby Moutain Theatre Company's production of Rashomon. IDS is a great program that allows students with defined interests to pursue them to the fullest extent of their ability while receiving school credit."

"Participating in my IDS Dance Choreography 12 course has been a great experience so far. I have been given the opportunity to work with my dance teacher to create choreography for Burnaby Mountain's Dance Company and one of the school's dance troops, Shake n' Bake.
I will be choreographing and performing in several pieces, in collaboration with my mentor.
This IDS course has given me an opportunity which is different from my regular dance classes, as I am an active participant in a more one-on-one learning experience."

Adam - Grade 12 student IDS Law 12
"Sitting in my Law class was always fun. I have always been interested in all things related to legal systems. When I heard about IDS and the possibility of exploring my interest in law even further, I immediately signed up! IDS allowed me to construct a program that penetrated the parts of Law I wanted to learn about. Going to the courts, speaking with Sheriffs, Judges, and others involved in the legal process exposed me to knowledge and opinions that were strikingly absent in the textbook. During my work experience practicum with Port Metro Vancouver, I took the time to introduce myself to their legal department.
IDS gave me the chance to step into the shoes of a legal professional and experience what I learned about in school first-hand."
Maziar and Alex - Grade 11 students IDS Marketing/ICT 12
"We are making an online Marketplace based on modern fashion for youth in the city of Vancouver. Being involved in this project provides us with mentors who specialize in different subjects to guide us in the right direction. As independent learners, we like that IDS gives us school credits for the work we are completing above and beyond the classroom.
We love being able to combine the subjects of technology, business, and marketing and we are learning so much from the connection between these different areas and how they work together.
The IDS program has opened a bright door for our future."
